Description The Sethusamudram Shipping Canal Project is a proposed initiative to link Palk Bay and the Gulf of Mannar between India and Sri Lanka by creating a shipping channel through the shallow sea known as Sethusamudram and a chain of islands collectively called Adam’s Bridge, Ramar Palam, and similar names. This project aims to provide a continuously navigable sea route around the Indian Peninsula. It involves digging a 44.9 nautical mile (51.7 mi; 83.2 km) long deepwater channel linking the shallow Palk Strait with the Gulf of Mannar. Conceived as early as 1860 by Alfred Dundas Taylor, the project recently received approval from the Indian government, which plans to break the limestone shoals of Adam’s Bridge as part of this initiative. Upon completion, the Sethusamudram Project will increase the number of ships entering and leaving Tuticorin Port, thereby boosting economic development in southern Tamil Nadu, increasing employment opportunities, reducing journey times, saving fuel, and significantly benefiting Tamil Nadu as a whole.
